Launching
U.GG Player Profiles

Background

U.GG was a website that provided recommendations and player statistics for people that played League of Legends (LoL). Player profiles were a new, essential feature that would allow U.GG to offer more features and services that would set the foundation for monetization.

Objectives

  • Prioritize a frictionless sign-up and onboarding process
  • Soft-launch premium accounts
  • Design a new player dashboard

We started with plotting out all the requirements for creating a new account or logging in: deciding how much information we wanted to collect and plotting out all the states for each step. One interesting wrinkle was getting users to verify their LoL account, which required an unusual process of pasting a special token into their profile.

After settling on a userflow we felt confident in, we started to turn to a user dashboard. For this, we turned to user session recordings we collected through HotJar and referenced a user survey that was promoted both on the site and through our community Discord. We took note of what users said were the most important stats to them and used that as a starting point for laying out the dashboard.

THE WRAP-UP

We had over ten thousand sign-ups in the first three months after we launched player accounts, which exceeded our expectations.
